Bionicle and Bionicle-stuff makes for great superbig guys for minimal investment. I've seen the old Knight's Kingdoms big dudes used as titans around here.

Lego building works like many other things: the best way to become awesome is to look at awesome people's work and steal ideas from them. A good place to start is the
Building School, especially their Building Techniques section.
