Come to think of it, I was slightly annoyed with and didn't find skillchecks very reasonable back in the day, but imho they even out the advantage of the player's initiative. Of course, if your dice hates you and you get a lot of fails because of that, that can be quite tedious, and pointlessly elongates the game.
@Braggalot: I've always played my part.
I use skill rolls where it's not important to me either way what happens. I just let the dice do the thinking. If it is Important or suits the story IMO then I'm happy to maybe re-roll or nudge the dice. This doesn't matter when it's a case of Forum Players against NPC goons but not so much when it's forum players vying for supremacy. That shit has to see to itself. Although bonus points go to those with the awesomest orders, again IMO. Initiative is another matter: I always roll a D6 for Initiative per team but add bonus modifiers (+2 to the first three posters, +1 to the next three, +0 to the rest and -1 or -2 to tardy latecomers).

I like your fantasy units. My favorite are the Dwarf Warriors. Those guys look rock hard!
