Not as bad as they want a giant army of clones. How many children do you know that like Clone Wars? How many children do you know that like LOTR as much as those kids like Clone Wars?

I'm in love with both, so my wallet is screwed. Throw in Ninjago as well.

But why do they have to be LOTR fans?
Again, why couldn't they be general fantasy fans who want armies of Lego men/elves/Dwarfs?

That's not what I'm saying. I think LOTR will sell great, but no where near how well Star Wars sells. Lego makes Star Wars Battle Packs because they know how much Star Wars stuff they sell and how much people will pay for it. Compared to any Lego fantasy line, I'm sure Star Wars outsells it without breaking a sweat. Therefore, it would be safer to assume that they're going to be making products based on other lines that aren't Star Wars, as Star Wars is a very special case when it comes to Lego.

At least until the Star Wars liscense ends in 2016. Although I'd say chances are likely that they will renew it AGAIN if it keeps selling like it does...

I'm sure George Lucas will come up with some new way to make more money before then.

But anyway, don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Battle Packs. And maybe LOTR will be a big hit and produce way more than anticipated. For the first wave, though, don't get your hopes up for anything more than you would see for Harry Potter or Indiana Jones.

Eh, I don't think so OneEye...

Good points OneEye... I happen to agree.. to a point. I'm sure it will get treated like most of the other themed line ups. As I outlined in my previouse post; you can almost guess the types of sets that will be released. All one has to do is look at PotC, Harry Potter, Prince of Persia, etc. etc. I'd be very surprised if LOTR will bring in anywhere NEAR the cash Star Wars brings in as a total percentage of revenue.

That said... I'm not sure there really is a correlation between sales and battle packs. They made a battle pack for the brand new Alien Conquest theme. That line didn't have to prove itself with sales and revenue before it got a battle pack. They released castle theme battle packs even though, and again I agree with you here, that theme doubtfully pulls in anywhere near the same revenue as Star Wars Same with the Pharaoh's Quest line up. I think it has more to do with putting out products that people want at the right price point; not what theme it is or how much money a given theme brings in.

Indeed, I remeber getting a Lego "Space Explorers" set, which was pretty much a battle pack.

It is only natural that the army-esque sets have battle packs- they invariably have the cooler miniatures, and thus there is more demand for such.

I referenced that Space Explorers set like every other week when I was pitching ideas to LEGO, but for two years they outright refused to ever again do minifigure-only sets without any construction in them and got increasingly irritated that I wouldn't shut up about it. Well who's laughing now LEGO! WHO'S LAUGHING NOW!

My efforts just resulted in the collectible minifigures thing, so it was like a 20% victory.

By Battle Pack I mean the sets that literally had "Battle Pack" in their name. They have 4 or 5 figures from the same faction in them, have no conflict going on, and used solely to increase one side of an army:

I think what you're referring to is what most people refer to as "impulse packs," with only one figure. I fully expect them to make those for orcs, elves, and humans.

If you're talking about the $10 sets with one from each side, or one with 3 from one side and 1 or 2 from another, those are just regular Lego sets, not really Battle Packs. At least in my opinion.

Well it looks like the Uruk-Hai set could be considered a battle pack, its got alot of figs and a small set which will be awesome, but on another note it looks like it might be more then $10 which is sad.

I can't understand why they've given up on that, those were the best things ever, a real bang for your buck if you needed a couple more figs to whichever theme you wanted.
