Bringin' in the big guns aka. my first Humongous Mecha

Post by Gorthaff » Tue Dec 30, 2014 9:00 pm

Today I semm to have had a LEGO vibe, and spent about eight hours building stuff. One of the results was this beauty you are about to see.
Browsing through the armoury thread I noticed a daunting number of ACs, STDs and other kinds of heavy equipment I do not have the caliber of guns to go up against, and also saw some interesting techniqes for bigger builds which I wanted to try out. This design is my official attempt at gaining Hellios a position in the elit club of superpowers. This is what six hours of nonstop building resulted in, opinions are as always greatly appriciated.:

Atlas Type Heavy Battlewalker

With Greebling and Interior:

Two spotlights, armoured skirt, communications package and better legs added.

The interior is now fully detailed.

Image
I really like this part. It is mostly ashameless ripoff of the minister.

Image
The two gunners man their consoles, behind the dual core reactor can be seen.

With Scythian LAVs running amoc in cities under siege and the Raptor Hardsuit lacking the armour to combat them effectively The Department of Defence commisioned Project:Titan. The goal was to make an assault platform capable of quickly navigating broken or urban terrain, the ability to negate cover provided by buildings and the armour to stand up to the Scythians gatling lasers. The result is the Atlas Battlewalker,a 12" tall, 9"long mech with a heavily armoured torso and wireframe legs. The reduced Armour on the hip and uper leg assembly allows for great protection of the crew and generator while still allowing the walker to effectively run circles around its bigger more heavily armoured counterparts. It has primarly been designed to combat lightly armoured vehicles, but in the hands of a skiled commander it can put up a fight against STDs or other Heavy walkers.

Its armament consists of a terrifying Mk7 Autocannon firing Heavy Artillery caliber shots at 180 rpm. It also has a Mk4 Anti air Flak Cannon and a Mk2 LMG. The weapon pods on the side pylons are interchangable, but currently hold two Rocketpods, with 16 Mk1 rockets each.

This might not have the stayingpower of most traditional mechs, but it has a terrifying Alphastrike thanks to its ability to fire all of its missiles in one turn if it doesn't use its main cannon. That kind of firepower is suffiicient to take out an assyrian Armoured Core, even if the Atlas is rendered mostly useless afterwards.

Image
As you can clearly see from this size comparison, Hellioses second bigest ground vehicle, the Minotaur Type Assault Transport, is dwarved by the Atlas. The regular trooper is barely visible in the corner.
ps.: I know It's reminiscent of a Catapult rather than an Atlas, but I've gota keep with the naming routine.

I'm not a fan of the rocket pods, but the rest of the mech seems decent enough.

Hell yes, this is awesome. Walking battleship for the win. The gun would look better with twin ammo drums rather than a belt, I think.

The legs might need more armor or something to make them look bigger, but otherwise the Atlas looks pretty cool. Can't wait to see it in action.

It is a nice looking mech. I especially like the interior. Legs can be improved with details.

Natalya took the time to build a replica of your MOC just to show the AC crush it to pieces. :omnom:

Perfect win.

It can fire 36 mkI missiles in an alphastrike. That's some 180 damage on avrage. It will be completely useless, but it still tears down half the health of your big ass robot, and rest as they say is just propaganda
. Also Respect. You took the time to replicate this thing. I frankly, am honoured.

I think it's 4 or 5 years old. I heard that Lego made a manufacturing change regarding the bromine flame retardant in their bricks because of yellowing, so if that's the case then I guess the older bricks have yellowed out while the newer ones resisted the change. I think it gives it a worn look, like it's seen some things.

@Gorthaff:
I tried to copy the Atlas brick for brick, and I did for some parts, but when I got to the legs, I have no idea how you did it. I could barely get this thing to stand up. Now to be fair I had trouble making the connection between the legs and the body because I couldn't tell from your pictures how you did it, but I gave it a shot before eventually just trying to beef everything up. However even with the reinforcements I did the mecha just wouldn't stand up. It fell down between every picture. Is yours more stable? Maybe if I saw how the legs connected to the body I could have done a better job.
