Captured, an iSoap

The Magic SOB forum is for posts of story sequences that are frequently vignette-based. Put those here while actual battle reports can go in Reports From the Field.
You must talk like James T. Kirk in this forum at all times. Leonard Nimoy is fine too.

Captured, an iSoap

Post by Quantumsurfer » Sun Jul 05, 2015 5:37 am

Welcome to Captured, the trial run of a new forum based storytelling concept I’m calling iSoap. Interactive Soap Opera Adventure Path. Actually, I haven’t the faintest whether it’s a new concept or not for the BrikWars forums…someone has probably done it at some point. I’m almost certain of that but can’t remember what off the top of my head. And it’s something I’ve seen done in other mediums. Anyway, it’s a pretty simple idea. I’ll present a story, like I would for any other soap, and at key points in the narrative, I’ll open a poll that presents several options for a branching narrative. The option that gets the most votes after a certain period of time wins and that’s the direction the story goes. It’s like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, except the reader is everyone.

Captured, specifically, will be shown mostly from the perspective of the narrator. I’ll do my best to finagle a kind of first person cam mode for the pictures. If it doesn’t work out well, then probably I won’t try it again in any future iSoaps. Luckily, being a trial run, Captured shouldn’t be very long.

Also, I’ve never used the poll function on the forums. I see it as an option when I create a new post but I have no idea if I’ll be able to change the poll when a new narrative decision comes up or if you have to be a mod to do that sort of thing. I suppose if it tanks out, there are some other voting options out there.

I have no idea what the intervals between scenes will look like. I still need to continue my forum battle at some point. But I do hope there is some interest. Enough Talky, let’s begin.

Image

I know every inch of this cell, this hellhole. It has been my own personal nightmare to wake each day and find myself continually imprisoned within its confines. I have paced over its grated floors, thrown myself uselessly at its concrete walls, and been driven mad by the incessant, pulsing hum of the energy conduit which encircles it. I have heard the faintest sounds through its ventilation systems…sounds of talking…and of battle. Oh, how I miss the fighting. But that seems like a lifetime ago and, aside from the groaning, creaking, and humming of what I fear will be my final resting place, it has been quiet for so long. Too long.

Image

I don’t know how long I’ve been here, dying by inches. I don’t even really remember much about my former life or who I am, really. I only remember the blindingly bright portals and the swarming armies that poured through them. They came and with them came chaos, bewildering and devastating. I remember how they cut most of us down before they took the remainder. Then, scientists, doctors, and pain. So much pain. Now, all that remains of my home and my people are the vague shadows in my mind. Meaningless shapes. I agonize over their loss but I can’t even remember why.

Image

They took it all from me. But then, as suddenly as they had come, they left me alone to rot in here. No more scientists came through my door. And with their absence, the pain finally began to recede. No more experiments, no more bodily or mental tortures to endure. I don’t know who they were or what they wanted from me. But I know that I feel clearer than I have in a long time. I know I hear the call of battle singing in my blood. And I know I cannot stay in this evil dungeon for a second longer.

Image

I have to get out. I don’t care what it takes. I don’t care what it costs. I don’t even remember what the other side of that damned door looks like but I need to find out. I need to breathe in the fresh air again. I need to see the sky. I need to run free, leap into the nearest battle, and feel the blood of enemies rain down upon me. I must break free. But how?

Please choose one of the following options. You may also make a post with an alternate write-in option or make a post in support of an existing write-in.

Option 1: Attempt to leverage the door open with anything he can get his hands on.

Option 2: Disrupt the purple energy conduit that flows all the way around the room in the hope that it powers the door in some way.

Option 3: Cry for help.

Oh boy, this looks promising.

I'd go with Option 2, otherwise, I'd also like to explore a possibility of interacting with those pipes on the ceiling.

@OP: You're right, something similar was done before by me -- Quest for the Hill. But Piltogg deleted it. Above is the opening scene.

Oh, yeah! I remember that now. Cool.
Scratch got me into that but so far all I've read are Problem Sleuth (which I adored) and Jailbreak. I tried reading Bard Quest but couldn't deal. With this, I was thinking something along the lines of what the guy over at Ctrl+Alt+Del does.

Option 6: lick finger and put it in the socket of the missing light bulb. I hear it gives you a 1-up.

Thanks for your interest! There were a good deal more votes than I expected. I’ve decided to include as much of the alternate suggestions as possible, to help flesh out the narrative a little. I’ll try to do this as much as possible going forward but for now, I think I managed to answer every post. I think this will likely be most useful for picking up items and such. Enjoy.

Image

Hmm, those valve wheels look a little loose. Perhaps I can break one off and use it as a weapon.

The Prisoner approaches the pipes, which he finds he can easily reach, and begins to fiddle with the valve wheels. To his surprise, the wheels seem to be the least decayed parts of the whole piping structure.

My hands, they feel so strange. I feel as if I have been torn apart and put back together again. Everything feels so numb. No matter, I will not let that stop me.

As he turns the wheels, the pipes emit a knocking sound and groan ominously. All at once, the pipes begin to rattle and buck violently.

Image

The old pipes burst! A sickly green, foul smelling gas erupts from the fissure in the pipe with a loud hiss. The Prisoner backs away hurriedly.

Gas! I haven’t much time! At this rate, that gas will fill this cell in no time! I will not die this way!

Image

With a roar of inarticulate rage, the Prisoner spins around, looking for anything he might be able to use to make his escape.

When in doubt, start smashing things. What can I use to bust open this energy conduit? It looks to be the most fragile thing here and might be my only way out in time. The glass? No, stupid. Too small, too weak. Need something bigger, heavier. Of course! I’ll just…

Image

The Prisoner whirls back around trying to fight down his rising panic and think clearly.

But…I thought…No, Dammit! Get ahold of yourself! What are you thinking!? No time! No time! Hell with it!

Image

The Prisoner strides over to the energy circuit and slams into it with everything he’s got. It shreds into him but between the panic and the disconnected numbness, he barely feels it.

Tasks involving the Prisoner’s right hand will be significantly more difficult until he can treat it medically.

To his surprise, the energy turns out to be multi-phasic and, on contact with the air, burbles into a thick, gooey, purple slime that splashes onto the floor. The door behind him audibly powers down and emits a loud click.

Image

As the Prisoner charges toward the door, it springs back to life and the doors swish open with a startling swiftness and precision. The purple goo burbles again as more of it sloshes out onto the floor of the cell and, following suit, the door powers down, its safety mechanisms operating to slam it shut again. The process repeats with rapidity.

Aw, hell.

Even with the door whisking open every second or so, the gas shows no sign of dissipating. It is dense and dangerously snakes its way toward the floor.

Image

The Prisoner decides to leap for it! He just barely makes it through and finds himself sprawled on the grating, safely away from the spasming cell door.

Image

Groaning, he stands and looks back toward the danger and the cell that almost cost him his life, in so many ways. He is reflective for a moment.

It still may have.

Image

Looking down the corridor to his right, he sees a large glowing doorway, marked with the holographic alphanumeric tag, “P3.”

Portal Three, maybe? Are these cells isolated from one another?

Image

To his left he finds another doorway, curtained in the same purple energy. The holographic tag does not appear to be functioning.

Image

There do not appear to be any other viable exits.

Image

The door’s clanging open and shut is slowing noticeably. It’s hard to tell whether the door will finally lose power open or closed.

Image

The Prisoner can see that the gas is showing no signs of stopping and knows he must find a way out of this node before it fills even these corridors and slowly robs him of his chance to breathe fresh air again.

The Portals could be guarded. Though he yearns for a good fight, he also knows that if he is caught and beaten, his final wish will not go totally fulfilled. It is a risk either way.

What should the Prisoner do? Please choose one of the following options. You may also make a post with an alternate write-in option or make a post in support of an existing write-in.

Option 1: Head through the P3 Portal.

Option 2: Head through the Unnamed Portal.

Option 3: Investigate the area further in hopes of finding an alternate exit or something of use. And pray he doesn’t choke to death doing it.

Okay, I have no idea what the hell is up with the voting form. I tried replacing the options but it kept all the votes. So I tried erasing everything, submitting empty to clear it, and then putting everything back in. Apparently, it decided that it needed to place several of the same option multiple times. I don't know why.

Going through the P3 portal seems like the most logical thing to do.

I think the voting system is broken.
I viewed the results first, the top three were these
3
3
3
All the rest were 0

I voted for option 2
they then looked like this
4
4
4

Soooooo ...

Yeah, I don't know how to fix it. I guess maybe you guys can post your choices in normal posts and I'll tally them by hand. Unless someone has a better idea. If not, I'll go by what I can.
