Yes, more redcoats.

Post by old blooded » Tue Apr 13, 2010 4:20 pm

Hi,

New to the forum and stuff, and I noticed that muffinman also just posted a redcoat army :P
But hey, had to post something :P

So I'm planning on creating a redcoat army.
I've done some research (better known as read wikipedia) and found the numbers of the original army. This was quite a number (22 000).

Well, after reading this, I decided to make a 1/100 version of it :P
Yes that makes 220 minifigs and I'm a long way from there. xD oh, 235 if you include artillery crew

The plan is this:
12 regiments of 12 redcoat infantrists, each one with a officer.
11 regiments of 6 horses, light cavalry. also all with an officer.
1 regiment of 10 horses, the dragoons, badasses on horseback and on ground.
5 canons with 3 crew members. (this is 1/10 to the real amount, but I thought a half canon would be kinda lame)
1 Hero, general, with a command squad.

Where I am on the moment:
1 Regiment of 12 infantrists

1 regiment of 6 horses, here shown with the general, instead of a complete 6 cavalarists (is that a word?) but it is atm normal unit.

2 canons

a bit to small overview picture, but ohwell.

I loved the face of the guy at the store :P

Ohwell, as the army increases I will post more :P
Not yet calculated points, thought of certain rulings and stuff, that will come when I have time for it.

EDIT: Well got some more infantry, not really interesting to post :P
But I looked at the leftover guns I had, as cavalry and artilery men didn't use them, and thought: Hier kan ik echt wel een volley gun mee maken :P Which is dutch for: I can totally make a volley gun with this. :P

So, I did.

Gunners reloading it. The telescope/cone thingy represents the gunpowder cone thing. The round stud 1x1 brix are bullets and the stick is the cleaning thingy :| how do I call that in english, ohwell.
Ready to fire.

2nd EDIT:
So I thought: I'm a reasonable painter, I can paint my own green coat.
ImageImage
So I did. The lighting isn't great, so I'll replace it when the sun shines again (best light you'll ever get on this planet) :)

What a coincidence. Run for the hills, it's an invasion

Seriously though:

I advice you to addle your plans :? Having a large army is cool and I'm building one myself but when it takes that much time, effort and most of all money you will want to create something less generic, and more original. You'll be more proud of your work later and the army will feel more like it's really yours. There's tons of nice ideas you can come up with for figs, I'm sure of it. Still, this is a good start.

Also, 220 is a real LOT. The army I'm building is like huge to me, and it's still a lot less than the plans you have for these. Also, do you have enough figs to oppose the whole army when it's finished and keep the battle interesting? If you don't, their numbers don't need to be this high.

And another hint: you won't want as many of the same unit as this. The most I'll ever have of the same unit type, is 12, even if they're all called 'infantry' they're still different-looking, and also stat - and ability-wise. It'll keep your battles interesting and allow for a more tactical approach.

Of course it's all your choice, but I'm just giving my opinion on what I think would be the best for you :) If you want help thinking of how to create more different kinds of units, I'll be glad to think along.

Edit: I nearly forgot: Welcome to BrikWars!

These are great, I like the bearskin hat (tyres) on the cavalryman. Any thoughts on making some Green Jacket riflemen? It wouldn't be too hard.

Worked for the most armies in history ;) Furthermore a diverse army ofcourse has more different answers to a situation. But my own experience in wargaming calls me to go with a lot of the same unit :) I shall do as I please =3 :P

Further on the amount: It's a goal, I will play first some with the smaller army as it is growing. The final result will be more showcase than playable. But it's all about the awesomeness :P

On the green jacket riflemen, they were formed in 1966, about 70 to 80 years after the british abandoned. But I like the the green jacket idea, I might use it for the command squad.

Great, glad you like the idea but are you sure of the dates, I could be wrong as I base most of what I know from novels Green Jackets as per the books by Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series. If anyone's looking for a good read and to learn about this era then I recommend they try these novels.

Warheard, I watched the movies myself, I loved 'em.

But, really, 220 minifigs? My god man, you've got enough manpower to take on absolutely ever other army out there, vehicles and all!

Heck, I had to compensate for my lack of men with robots, and it was still not enough! You must be compensating. You MUST.

Well that's a cool little army. At one point I was planning to do sth familiar, but I lost interest somehow.

I've found that its easy to convert a redcoat army to something less common by giving them black/white airtanks and the firefighter breathing thingey. if you add goggles in stead of a regular visor you get a steampunk-ish look.
- I refuse to be stopped by something as irrelevant as logic, the laws of physics, or common sense -

if 20 chickens can fit in a brick, how many pingpongballs does a crocodile have to eat so it can swim faster than a washing machine?

well, the first thought is afcourse making an authentic british army. Other things can later be added of course.

@ Warhead: Hadn't read about them :P ohwell, that'll make a nice addition as sniper unit :)

Good man! I'll expect the regimental Sergeant Major to deliver the preliminary sketches so I can peruse them over a glass of port. :D

@ Ranger S2H: You're not wrong, I'll be doing my Space Pirates this way.

If you think that's funny, listen to the way I talk! It's just as bad.

New pictures in the first post (EDIT) thought it would be easier if al pictures were just in one post. Well, you can see I got a new artillery piece. For the rest, friends are helping me collect the horses, 76 are harder to come by than I thought (yes, I know I can order them, but friend support is more fun :P and cheaper xD). I know have 16, which is a good start, as I only had 5 last week :D

220 isn't that much, as you must understand that it will be the whole army. Most battles were fought by separate faction of the army. The whole army just gives me the change to play with this reason: yup, you just pissed of BRITAIN real bad :P (though I'm dutch, but that's not the point here). Also it will give me the opportunity to play with relieve forces, and the like :)
